TRUE TALK - Seek guidance from God

TRUE TALK: Seek Guidance from God

As a parent, there are few things more heartwarming than seeing your child come to you for help or guidance. Recently, my toddler came up to me with a problem that she needed my assistance to solve. She had been using a straw to drink her juice, but it had broken, and she needed a new one.

Now, some might say that this is a trivial matter, but for a two-year-old, it’s a big deal. My daughter looked up at me with those big brown eyes, and I could see the sincerity in her voice when she said, “Daddy, my straw broke, and I need a new one.” It was in that moment that I realized that this was an opportunity for me to teach her about seeking guidance from God.

As a Christian, I believe that God is always ready and willing to guide us, no matter what challenges we may face. Sometimes, we just need to be still and listen for His voice. In Psalm 32:8, the Bible says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” This verse reminds us that God is always available to guide us, and all we need to do is seek His guidance.

So, how can we seek guidance from God? Here are a few ways:

  1. Prayer: Prayer is one of the most effective ways to communicate with God. When we pray, we should be still and listen for God’s response. Sometimes, He may speak to us through His Word, other times through a still small voice in our hearts, or even through circumstances.
  2. Reading the Bible: The Bible is God’s Word, and it contains guidance for every area of our lives. When we read the Bible, we should be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit, who can help us understand what God is saying to us.
  3. Seeking wise counsel: Sometimes, we may need guidance from people who are wiser and more experienced than us. Proverbs 11:14 says, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.” Seeking advice from godly people can help us make better decisions and avoid pitfalls.
  4. Listening to our conscience: God has given us a conscience that can guide us when we’re unsure what to do. Sometimes, we may feel a conviction in our hearts when we’re about to do something wrong. Other times, we may feel a peaceful feeling when we’re on the right path.

In the case of my daughter and her broken straw, I used it as an opportunity to teach her about seeking guidance from God. I told her that we could pray together and ask God to help us find a new straw. We held hands, closed our eyes, and prayed a simple prayer. Afterward, we searched high and low for a new straw, and eventually found one in the kitchen drawer. My daughter’s face lit up with joy when she saw it, and she thanked God for helping us find a new straw.

This small incident may seem insignificant to some, but it’s moments like these that can shape our children’s spiritual lives. By teaching them to seek guidance from God early on, we’re setting them up for a lifetime of trusting and following Him. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

In conclusion, seeking guidance from God is an essential part of our Christian walk. Whether we’re facing big or small challenges, God is always ready to guide us. By praying, reading His Word, seeking wise counsel, and listening to our conscience, we can be sure that we’re following the path He has for us. As parents, it’s our responsibility to teach our children how to seek guidance from God, so they can grow up to be godly men and women who trust and follow Him all their lives.
